On Wednesday, one man was killed and another was seriously injured when they drove off a cliff in Trinidad, landing on a beach at roughly 10:20 a.m.The men have not been identified and the California Highway Patrol has not determined why the car went over the embankment on Scenic Drive near Baker Ranch Road in Trinidad. The driver of the 2003 Toyota Camry was pronounced dead on the scene and the passenger was taken to St. Joseph Hospital with major injuries after the car fell roughly 200 feet down the cliffside, coming to a rest upside-down on the beach.CHP has been collaborating with the Brookings Police Department in Oregon on this case, which suspects the men could be part of a missing person case opened Monday, a father and a son.Related ArticlesCrashes and Disasters | Federal regulators to require automatic emergency braking on heavy trucks and buses Crashes and Disasters | Bay Area man gets over 100 years in prison for killing woman with car Cra...Golden State Warriors: Key moments in the draft that could shape the West

After RMS Titanic sank on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic in 1912, governments on both sides of the ocean took a hard look at whether more could have been done to protect the some 2,200 people aboard, including the more than 1,500 who died. The result was the Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Passed in 1914, its framework stands to this day, with many of its rules directly evolving from the Titanic tragedy. With the implosion of the submersible Titan as it dived down to the wreck of the Titanic this week, killing all five people aboard, experts say there may be a new push for rules governing new high end, big dollar tourism of the kind being practiced by OceanGate Expeditions, the company that ran the Titan. The unsinkable shipWhen the Titanic set sail from Southampton, it was the world’s largest ocean liner, built with state-of-the-art maritime technology that many thought made it unsinkable.“Not even God himself could sink this ship,” is a quote attributed to an...769,000 retired California workers and beneficiaries affected by pension fund hack

Decked out in patriotic red, white and blue, the Fourth of July is a federal holiday commemorating our nation’s declaration of independence from England. But with skyrocketing prices, an upswing in illegal lighting, tougher regulations and myriad other challenges facing the use of pyrotechnics in California, it seems to be getting harder and harder to continue a tradition started by one of our Founding Fathers back in 1776.Before becoming our second president, John Adams predicted a country reveling with “bonfires and illuminations” in a letter to his wife on the eve of the Second Continental Congress officially telling the tyrant King George III to take a hike. Little did Adams know that his star-spangled suggestion would spark concern and criticism nearly 250 years later.Inherent worries over safety and noise have always separated fireworks from baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and other relatively benign symbols of Americana. But even as fireworks-related injuries are at historic lo...$15.3 million of illegal cannabis seized from 20 East Bay grow sites

In a blistering attack on her Senate colleague last week, Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., warned independent Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema that a proposal to reduce the number of required in-flight training hours for pilots would result in “blood on your hands.” The attack from Duckworth was prompted by an amendment supported by Sinema and Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., that would allow pilots to meet training requirements by substituting hours spent in a flight simulator for actual flight time. For Duckworth, who lost both of her legs to a rocket attack on the Black Hawk helicopter she was piloting in 2004 during the Iraq War, the issue is personal. “Now is not the time to put corporate profits ahead of the lives of our constituents who may want to board a commercial flight in the future,” Duckworth said. “A vote to reduce a 1,500-hour rule for pilot training will mean blood on your hands when an inevitable accident occurs as a result of an inadequately trained flight crew.”The eleventh-hour ...Exploding fire extinguisher kills a student and injures 5 during a high school fire drill in Bangkok
