Phillies fans turn Citizens Bank Park into ‘4 hours of hell’ during Red October

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The wolfman mask is retired. Even without a costume, one of the founding fathers of the Wolf Pack — a band of Philadelphia Phillies fans that once commandeered a section of cheap seats at the Vet — still roots for his favorite team from a considerable distance.Patrick Wood slipped a bartender “a Euro or two” inside a raucous rugby Irish pub in Vienna around 11 p.m. local time, and soon one TV was flipped to a Phillies playoff game. The longer Wood and a buddy stuck around to watch, the more the beer drinkers and rugby fanatics that stayed deep into the night became absorbed by Phillies baseball.Kind of like back home.Wood, his brothers and cousins once formed one of Philly’s favorite fan clubs, howling, dancing, pumping their arms from section 739 — in 2023 jargon, about a Schwarbomb and a half from the plate — at the cold, concrete cookie cutter known as Veterans Stadium. The seasons were lean in Philly around the turn of the century — consider, a nondescript le...Capital One, BofA and the other largest banks in Greater Washington

Those five banks control more than 68% of Greater Washington’s $298 billion in bank deposits, yet McLean-based Capital One is the only one of the group headquartered here. While it has a much smaller branch footprint than the others it arguably has more brand recognition, as its name adorns the downtown sports arena, a concert venue adjacent to its headqu...AP Top 25 Reality Check: No. 1 Georgia’s margin on No. 2 Michigan shrinks, but ‘Dawgs set for bounce

The margin between No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Michigan in The Associated Press college football poll is the smallest it has been all season. Can the Wolverines break the Southeastern Conference’s three-year stranglehold on No. 1 — all Georgia and Alabama — and become the first team from outside the Deep South to hold the top spot in the rankings since Ohio State in 2015?Sure, if Georgia loses and Michigan keeps rolling along — obviously — but the window of opportunity for the Wolverines to snatch No. 1 away from the Bulldogs while they are winning has probably closed.Georgia ran its streak of appearances at No. 1 to 19 straight polls Sunday, third-longest in the history of the AP poll, which dates back to 1936.A nice milestone for a week off, though while out of sight the Bulldogs’ lead over Michigan shrank to a season-low 32 points.Neither of the teams that have held the top two spots in the AP Top 25 since the preseason have faced daunting schedules so far.Georgia’s ...19-year-old arrested for allegedly killing stepfather

After years of continued decline, the North Atlantic right whale population may be beginning to level off, though scientists emphasize that the critically endangered species still faces significant ongoing threats from human activities, a new population estimate shows. Each year, the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium releases the annual population estimate for the species using the most up-to-date data, including calves added to the population since the previous year. In a report being released this week at the Consortium’s annual meeting in Halifax, Nova Scotia, scientists used these updated data to recalculate annual estimates of the right whale population since 1990. The 2021 estimate was recalculated as 364 (+5/-4 for range of error)—primarily due to the 18 calves born in 2021, many of which were recently catalogued—and the 2022 estimate is 356 animals (+7/-10), suggesting the downward trajectory for the species could be slowing. These estimates are the result of a collaborati...Debate on whether to censure NDP MPP to continue at Queen’s Park today

The debate on whether to censure an Ontario NDP MPP is expected to continue at Queen’s Park on Monday.Last week, the Ford government introduced a motion could lead to Hamilton Centre MPP Sarah Jama being censured if she does not apologize for a statement she made on the Israel-Hamas war. The motion’s approval would effectively silence Jama in the legislature. The Progressive Conservatives have a majority so the motion will likely pass, but House Speaker Paul Calandra would not necessarily be bound to follow it, and could exercise his discretion to still allow Jama to speakJama came under fire earlier this month for the online post she made in response to the latest Israel-Hamas war where she decried the “occupation” of Palestine without mentioning the Oct. 7 surprise attack by Hamas militants. She later posted an apology but did not retract her original statement. She has since pinned the post on her X account so it stays visible at the top of her profile. ...Sydney court postpones extradition hearing of former US military pilot until May

SYDNEY (AP) — A Sydney court on Monday postponed an extradition hearing for a former U.S. military pilot accused of illegally training Chinese aviators until May as his lawyers attempt to further build their case.Boston-born Dan Duggan, 55, was scheduled to fight his extradition to the United States at a Nov. 23 hearing in the downtown Downing Center Local Court. But a magistrate decided to use that date to rule on what additional information that the Australian defense department and security agencies should provide defense lawyers.U.S. lawyer Trent Glover told the court the United States was ready to proceed with the extradition, but had agreed with defense lawyers the hearing should take place after November.Duggan’s lawyer, Dennis Miralis, told reporters outside court that the stakes were high for his client, who faces up to 65 years in prison if convicted.“This is existential, which means that every right that Dan has under the Australian legal system on the basis that he’s pres...Latest news
