Long-simmering frustrations among Colorado lawmakers erupted into public view in a chaotic ending to the 2023 legislative session Monday night, as major legislation died and Democrats vented frustrations with their Republican colleagues and with each other. In the span of an hour, House Republicans walked out of the Capitol in protest of a late Democratic effort to rush through changes to state tax policy. Gov. Jared Polis’s sweeping land-use reform bill died. In a meeting of the entire caucus, some House Democrats publicly questioned their party’s achievements for the session and wondered aloud if it was worth working with Republicans. The chaos that unfolded in the legislature followed a grueling session of lengthy debates, previously rare weekend work, and a growing sense of acrimony among lawmakers in both chambers. Progressive lawmakers grew frustrated as their priority housing, gun violence, and substance use bills died in a Capitol that’s fully controlled by Democrats. Their mo...Onset of warm weather means rattlesnakes are coming out of hiding

In this case, company spokeswoman Helen Wood said, “We love old, unusual buildings. But, it’s very rare for one to become available in a spot that works for us. Fortunately, we’ve learned that we can be just as successful in other types of buildings … even strip malls.”But this particular strip mall, Mayfair Center, is actually a distinctive mid-century modern shopping complex with a 1950s aesthetic and an orange and g...19-year-old died in Colorado jail cell from fatal medication cocktail prescribed by medical staff, lawsuit says

SANTA CLARA — Only 20 months ago, Cameron Latu had yet to score a touchdown in his Alabama career. He was relatively new on the scene, at least as a tight end, having converted from outside linebacker after his freshman year. Then he scored two touchdowns in their 2021 season-opening win over Miami.“Before (the 2020) season, I said, ‘You know, I think you have a lot better shot to be a tight end. You got good hands, you got great size, you’re a good athlete.’ And he bought into it,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said after that win.The 49ers bought into it, too. They used a third-round pick (No. 101) to draft Latu, the ninth tight end selected.“He’s a versatile player in that he’s good in both the run and the pass,” general manager John Lynch said, “but he went to ‘Bama as a linebacker and I think he plays like that. He’s an aggressive player.”At least two 49ers won’t be strangers to Cameron Latu when he shows up for rookie minicamp this wee...With George Berkeley’s slave-owner past uncovered, will the city or university consider a name change?

The problematic pasts of historical figures have forced the renaming of hundreds of buildings and the removal of dozens of statues from public squares across the U.S. But what happens when the name of an entire community is tainted by racial injustice? It’s perhaps ironic that Berkeley is the latest place to face this question. The city’s reputation for anti-imperialism has only grown since becoming the nation’s first city to swap Columbus Day for “Indigenous Peoples Day” in 1992 and installing city-limit signs that declare “Welcome to the City of Berkeley — Ohlone Territory” in 2019. Last year, the City Council agreed to begin its meetings with a land acknowledgment, recognizing Berkeley as stolen land from its first inhabitants, the Ohlone people. But now, historians at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, have renewed scrutiny of records indicating that the city’s namesake — Bishop George Berkeley, an 18th-century Irish philosopher and influential schol...Northern California woman hid mother’s death for 10 years; mom’s skeletal remains found, police say

Authorities have found skeletal remains of a Ukiah woman whose death was concealed for as long as a decade by her now-deceased daughter in order to use the mother’s bank account, police said Monday. The matter, which Ukiah police are investigating as a suspicious death, was discovered April 24 in the 700 block of El Rio Street after police were contacted by the elder woman’s son, according to a news released issued by authorities. No names have been released and no arrests are expected to be made because the lone suspect is now dead, officials said. The man, who told police he lived out of state, said his mother lived with his sister in Ukiah. He returned to Ukiah last month because his 58-year-old sister was hospitalized and later died.He told police he last communicated with their mother before she died in August 2013.The sister claimed their mother’s remains were transported to a “medical research facility” as per her wishes and no alarms were raised because the mother had been in p...Annual inflation in U.S. cooled off slightly in April

Annual inflation continued its slow-but-steady deceleration in April, according to the latest Consumer Price Index released Wednesday. The CPI climbed by 4.9% for the 12 months ended in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, representing a slightly slower pace of increase than the 5% in March. It was below economists’ expectations for the number to remain unchanged. It’s the 10th consecutive month that the headline CPI rate has slowed, and it’s at its lowest rate since April 2021 — when this bout of painfully high inflation started to spike.Excluding food and energy costs, which tend to have more volatility, core CPI was unchanged at 5.5% for the 12 months ended in April. On a monthly basis, both the headline and core indexes recorded increases of 0.4%, matching forecasts from economists, some of whom anticipated higher fuel and used car prices to provide some upward pressure.April’s data showed that the biggest month-on-month gains seen in th...Latest news
