Letters: The climate case for Summit Avenue changes doesn’t hold up

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 11:49:13 GMT

Challenging a climate argumentEfforts by St. Paul City Council Member Mitra Jalali to rationalize ripping up Summit Avenue and devastating its canopy of mature trees do not withstand factual scrutiny. Jalali claimed in an interview with Pioneer Press on Oct. 25 that opposition to the plan “denies our climate crisis.” But, she ignores the fact that hundreds of mature trees would be cut down to make way for the project. Each of those trees absorbs 48 pounds of carbon dioxide a year and releases oxygen in exchange, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Cutting down those trees and adding more paving adds to our climate crisis. Leaving the trees in place to thrive is a positive step toward reducing our climate crisis.Taking account of Minnesota winters and weather, the elevated bike lanes will take little or no auto-commute traffic off the roads. Public transit holds the best hope of reducing auto traffic here.Jalali claimed that opposition “neglects our infrastructure.” Ther...

Eyedrops from Target, CVS and others carry possible infection risk, FDA says

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 11:49:13 GMT

WASHINGTON — U.S. health regulators are warning consumers not to use more than two dozen varieties of over-the-counter eyedrops because of the risk of infections that could lead to blindness. The Food and Drug Administration advisory applies to lubricating drops sold by six companies, including CVS Health, Target, Rite Aid and Cardinal Health. Consumers should stop using the products immediately and avoid purchasing any that remain on pharmacy and store shelves, the FDA said in a statement Friday. The agency asked the companies to recall their products last week, because FDA inspectors found unsanitary conditions and bacteria at the facility producing the drops. The FDA did not disclose the location of the factory or when it was inspected. No injuries related to the products had been reported at the time of the announcement, but the FDA encouraged doctors and patients to submit cases through the agency’s online reporting system.Earlier this year, federal officials linked an outbreak of...

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 11:49:13 GMT

CLAYTON, Mo. – St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell is changing the seat he is running for. He is dropping his run for Senate and now running for US Congress. He will be vying for Cori Bush's US congressional seat. The Democratic primary for that race is in August 2024.“Over the last several weeks, as I’ve campaigned around the state, I’ve heard one refrain from Democrats above all else: yes, we need you in Washington, but St. Louis needs you in the House of Representatives," states Bell. “So, after thoughtful consideration and consultation with respected and committed community and political leaders, I am formally withdrawing as a candidate for the U.S. Senate, and announcing my candidacy for the Democratic nomination to US House of Representatives for Missouri’s First Congressional District.”Bell would have faced Democrat Lucas Kunce and others in a primary race for the state's US Senate seat currently held by Republican Josh Hawley. Opinion: Denver Imam and rabbi make plea for peace, bridge building

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 11:49:13 GMT

As faith leaders, colleagues, and friends who come from different traditions, we share diverse perspectives on the State of Israel and the plight of the Palestinian people. We are alarmed by the continuing violence and the ongoing war Israel is waging on Hamas due to their despicable attacks on innocent people on Oct. 7.We are deeply concerned about the conflict’s continued impact on Gaza, the West Bank and further escalation throughout the region. People we care about are in harm’s way. Loved ones have been killed. We grieve the unprecedented loss of life. We pray for a swift resolution to the conflict, the release of all hostages and the creation of a process wherein Palestinians and Israelis can live side by side in harmony. We are also very concerned about how the war in Israel and Palestine has impacted members of our own Muslim and Jewish communities here in Colorado — and, indeed, throughout the world.  The documented rise in anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim rhetoric a...

Douglas Bruce: Don’t undermine TABOR revenue limits with Prop. HH

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 11:49:13 GMT

After 30 years of success, legislative leftists still hate the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) Amendment. Voters have rejected past schemes to surrender our right to vote on runaway government growth, but politicians won’t leave us alone. In 2022, they reluctantly sent us a TABOR refund of excess state revenue ($750 per person, $1,500 for joint filers), but their resolve is still “Never again!”On the last day of this year’s session, a one-party cabal put on the ballot their 48-page scam for a new cap that will exponentially increase state spending. Dozens of conservative legislators walked out. Legislative hearings? Last minute. Public input? Limited. Respect for the Constitution? None. Respect for the rule of law? None.A constitutional mandate like TABOR cannot legally be changed by a regular bill like Senate Bill 303 to put Proposition HH on the ballot. No election to change TABOR can be held in an off-year like 2023. You know that. Politicians count on their politically-appointe...

Broncos stock report: RG Quinn Meinerz looks like a dominant interior offensive lineman

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 11:49:13 GMT

Stock UpRG Quinn MeinerzYou’d be hard-pressed to find somebody on either sideline who played better Sunday than Broncos right guard Quinn Meinerz. He was dominant in the run game and more than held his own in pass protection, save for one Chris Jones rush that Meinerz still managed to hang in on for long enough. The third-year man out of Wisconsin-Whitewater is turning himself into one of the best interior linemen in football. Plain and simple.RB Javonte WilliamsThe Broncos running back has been waiting for a game like this. He logged a career-high 30 touches (27 carries) for 98 yards and his first touchdown since that brutal knee injury last year. Williams looks a little healthier each week and on Sunday did exactly what Denver needed. He ran tough between the tackles, took what he could get and secured the ball. Williams got the rock on two of every three snaps he played against Kansas City. That’s a workhorse.CB Ja’Quan McMillianDenver’s tough little nickel back turned in his sec...
