A study of links between fracking and health issues will be released by Pennsylvania researchers HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Researchers in heavily drilled Pennsylvania were preparing Tuesday to release findings from taxpayer-financed studies on possible links between the natural gas industry and pediatric cancer, asthma and poor birth outcomes. The four-year, $2.5 million project is wrapping up after the state’s former governor, Democrat Tom Wolf, in 2019 agreed to commission it under pressure from the families of pediatric cancer patients who live amid the nation’s most prolific natural gas reservoir in western Pennsylvania.A number of states have strengthened their laws around fracking and waste disposal over the past decade. However, researchers have repeatedly said that regulatory shortcomings leave an incomplete picture of the amount of toxic substances the industry emits into the air, injects into the ground or produces as waste. The Pennsylvania-funded study involves University of Pittsburgh researchers and comes on the heels of other major studies that are finding...

Georgia election indictment highlights wider attempts to illegally access voting equipment ATLANTA (AP) — A day after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, as the country was still reeling from the violent attempt to halt the transfer of presidential power, a local Republican Party official greeted a group of computer experts outside the election office in a rural county in south Georgia, where they were given access to voting equipment.Their intent was to copy software and data from the election systems in an attempt to prove claims by President Donald Trump and his allies that voting machines had been rigged to flip the 2020 election to his challenger, Democrat Joe Biden, according to a wide-ranging indictment issued late Monday.Several of those involved are among the 19 people, including the former president, charged with multiple counts in what Georgia prosecutors describe as a “conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump.”The charges related to the breach of election equipment in Coffee County highlight that the pressure camp...

(AP) — The Seattle Seahawks activated linebacker Jordyn Brooks off the physically unable to perform list Tuesday, less than nine months after he suffered a major knee injury.Brooks’ return instantly boosts Seattle’s linebacker group, which has already seen the return of Bobby Wagner and the addition of Devin Bush this offseason.Brooks suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on Jan. 1 in a game against the New York Jets. He had surgery later in January and, while getting back for the start of this season was the goal, it seemed a little optimistic that he’d be ready in time for the Sept. 10 season opener against the Los Angeles Rams. But Seattle coach Pete Carroll has said throughout training camp that Brooks was on the verge of returning and just needed to get to the point where he was in football condition before being activated off the PUP list.Brooks is entering his fourth season after being drafted in the first round by the Seahawks in 2020. Bills tackle Brandon Shell not at practice, and team places 7th-year player on reserve-retired list ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Recently signed offensive tackle Brandon Shell was not present at the Buffalo Bills’ practice on Tuesday, with the team announcing the 31-year-old intends to retire after seven NFL seasons.Shell, who was placed on the reserve-retired list, signed with the Bills on June 1 and was considered the primary backup to starting right guard Spencer Brown on the team’s depth chart. His departure thins Buffalo’s veteran depth at the position, leaving the team with only two backup tackles with NFL experience — sixth-year player David Quessenberry and Tommy Doyle, who is entering his third season.Shell played 18 snaps, including one on special teams, in a 23-19 preseason-opening win against Indianapolis on Saturday. The Twins are bringing back Royce Lewis after an oblique strain cost him 36 games MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins returned third baseman Royce Lewis from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the injured list on Tuesday, following a 36-game absence because of a strained left oblique muscle. The Twins placed infielder Willi Castro on the injured list before their game against Detroit with what they called a mild left oblique strain to make room for Lewis, whose promising start to his major league career was waylaid by an injury for the second straight year.Last season, Lewis posted an .867 OPS in 12 games before tearing the ACL in his right knee. Called up on the one-year anniversary of that injury, the first overall pick in the 2017 draft picked right up where he left off by hitting .326 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 26 games until hurting his oblique on July 1.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLBSource

Prosecutors in the Hunter Biden case deny defense push to keep gun charge agreement in place WASHINGTON (AP) — A legal showdown over the derailed plea deal for Hunter Biden continued Tuesday as prosecutors asserted that an agreement on a gun charge is dead along with the rest of the deal as the case makes a major shift into a special counsel investigation. While the agreement that was supposed to have wrapped up the long-running investigation of President Joe Biden’s son largely unraveled during a contentious court hearing last month, prosecutors said the two sides had continued to negotiate until the defense rejected their final counterproposal the day before U.S. Attorney David Weiss asked to be named special counsel. Lawyers for Hunter Biden have argued that prosecutors reneged on an agreement on tax charges but said a separate agreement sparing him prosecution on a gun charge remains valid. The agreement on the gun charge also contains an immunity clause against federal prosecutions for some other potential crimes. Prosecutors denied reneging on any deal. While the...
